3 Week Mini-Series!

Design, create, then play with sock puppets! Imagine what wild and wonderful character you will become, complete with a personality, style, and voice all your own!

Ages 6 – 15 (1st – 10th Grade)

Tuition is $75

Build-A-Play: Youth Theatre Class – Registration Now Open for Fall 2025!
This fall, Matrix Theatre Company invites young creators to step into the spotlight with Build-A-Play, our signature youth theatre class where kids become the writers, directors, and performers of their very own original play!

Guided by a Matrix Teaching Artist, students will work together to:
✍️ Explore creative writing and script development
📚 Learn the building blocks of storytelling and theatre
🎲 Play imaginative games that strengthen performance skills
🎭 Create and perform their own original play at a final showcase

This dynamic, hands-on class is designed for youth ages 6–13 (1st–8th grade) and is perfect for kids of all experience levels — from budding performers to imaginative storytellers.

Dates: Thursdays, October 9 – December 18

We joined other artists, creatives, educators, leaders, mentors, founders, and more to advocate for the restoration of Arts and Culture funding to the state budget. The House has passed a budget cutting $10 million for arts and culture in the FY 2026 Budget. Art and Culture programs reach 12 million residents and 4 million children in Michigan annually, contribute $20.5 BILLION to our economy, and support over 144,000 jobs.

But there’s still time to act! The House, Senate, and governor need to negotiate a budget to avoid a government shutdown by Oct 1. We need you now! Detroit Theatre Collective Hosts New York Production of Heisenberg at Matrix Theatre

A new production of Simon Stephens' play, directed by Oscar winner Mercedes Ruehl, will play for two nights in southwest Detroit this June.

A chance encounter between two strangers in a London train station sets off a chain of events that defy logic and expectation, leading them into an exhilarating, life-changing relationship.

Detroit Theatre Collective is thrilled to present Heisenberg, directed by Tony and Oscar award-winning Mercedes Ruehl, fresh from a New York run produced by New Music Theatre Project & Rapeteta Theatre Company. The sure-to-be-provocative two-night fundraising event for DTC will be held at Matrix Theatre Company in southwest Detroit.

Written by award-winning playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), Heisenberg is an extraordinary play that explores the terrifying, exhilarating nature of human connection. The intimate performance will feature Detroit native T.M. Rawlins as Georgie Burns and Michael S. Horowitz as Alex Priest.

Doors will open at 7pm on Friday June 6th and Saturday June 7th. Wine, cheese, and mingling from 7:00pm — 7:45pm; performance begins at 8:00pm. The show runs for 85 minutes.

Detroit Theatre Collective is a pop-up performance ensemble founded in 2013. The collective is dedicated to exploring the outer limits of realism through original work and forgotten but worthy plays.

We’re thrilled to welcome Carmen Malis King lluvia_d._flores —a Detroit-rooted writer, community herbalist, and mother—who will be speaking at our performance! With over 15 years of herbalism practice, Carmen’s work is deeply inspired by the plants of the Great Lakes bioregion and her Central American maternal heritage.

Carmen is also a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach with a B.A. in English and Women’s Studies from Wayne State University and an M.A. in Integrative Health Studies from the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Meet Elise performing her autobiographical work: Queen of the Night as a part of Women You Oughta Know at Matrix Theatre Company!

Elise Bryant is the former executive director of the Labor Heritage Foundation and founding director of the DC Labor Chorus. Award-winning playwright and social justice activist, Elise got her start in the labor movement as a member of the Wobblies (Industrial Workers of the World). Elise is also a labor educator and taught at the University of Michigan Labor Studies Center and the National Labor College. She received a Masters of Science in Organization Development degree from American University and was given the Lifetime Achievement award from the United Association of Labor Educators the same year. In 2017 she was elected Vice President of CWA/Newspaper Guild Local 32035 and President of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW). She was re-elected as the president of CLUW in 2021. In 2022, Elise gratefully accepted the Amsterdam News Labor Award on behalf of the Coalition of Labor Union Women’s National Officers of Color. She is currently working on her memoir, “Queen of the Night” and a second episode for the play version.

Meet Kamryn! Performing Movers, Shakers and Music Makers at Women You Oughta Know at Matrix Theatre Company!

Kamryn is a performer, writer, and ecological gardener based in Royal Oak, Michigan. She studied Musical Theatre at Oakland University and spent time in Chicago writing and performing sketch comedy and working as an actress and teaching artist with theater companies in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and New York. In 2019, she co-founded Cayuga Climate Action in Auburn, NY: a group of concerned community members working to educate, advocate, and act on the climate crisis. While there, she cultivated her passions for holistic health and permaculture by working at Silver Tree Forest Farm. Currently, she works with Garden Juju Collective (www.gardenjujucollective.com): a team of skilled practitioners dedicated to healing places, communities, and people.
